A Health Fair for All!
(San Francisco, CA) – Approximately 200 patients and community members gathered at the Shotwell Clinic on a sunny afternoon to learn, get screened for diabetes and/or hypertension, and talk to medical personnel. It was also a great opportunity to meet and engage with friends and neighbors. Mission Neighborhood Health Center organized a health fair on Wednesday, August 10, 2022, to celebrate National Health Center Week 2022.
The event attracted patients and community members, including neighbors from the new affordable housing buildings in the northern part of San Francisco’s Mission District, close to the Shotwell Clinic on Shotwell and 16th streets.
“We are excited to celebrate Health Center Week and offer this health fair,” said Brenda Storey, MNHC’s Executive Director. “We know that engaging with our community inspires us all, especially when we can also provide health information, access to health services, and other resources.”
Participants were screened for diabetes, hypertension, and HIV; and received plenty of information from the women’s clinic, pre-natal team, asthma prevention education, teen clinic staff, pharmacy, and dental services providers, human resources, and other programs. Those interested in learning about Medi-Cal and how to become patients at MNHC were welcomed by MNHC’s patient services staff. Among other surprises, people received a meal and groceries from our farmer’s market created just for the health fair. Participants enjoyed listening to DJ “B-Fresh,” and dancing to the Zumba mini-classes led by instructor Jenny Morales.
The following organizations joined the event and provided information and resources: Mission Promise Neighborhood, Instituto Familiar de la Raza, UCSF’s Memory and Aging Center, San Francisco Municipal Transportation Authority, and the California Highway Patrol, including their mascot Chipper.
