MNHC Awarded City Grant for Medical Services Growth

The Mayor London N. Breed’s Office of Housing and Community Development awarded Mission Neighborhood Health Center (MNHC) through the Nonprofit Sustainability Initiative (NSI) $750,000 to help expand access to health and dental services in the Excelsior and Outer Mission.

The NSI is an initiative that provides financial assistance, professional services, assessment tools and other resources to help stabilize nonprofits and overcome barriers to growth.

In collaboration with Bridge Housing, MNHC will own the soon-to-be developed 10,000 square foot commercial space on the ground floor of a 137-unit affordable housing development at 4840 Mission Street.

The new space will feature an expansion in medical service space, a wellness conference room for patient education, behavioral health and dental preventative services. The space will significantly increase access to the Excelsior community by doubling MNHC’s patient capacity from 3,000 to 6,000 patients a year.

MNHC currently rents a much smaller clinical site in the Excelsior District located at 4434 Mission Street, which has provided the Excelsior community with medical care since 2000.

The $750,000 grant will help kick-start MNHC’s $3.5 million capital campaign. “We are grateful to have the support of Mayor London Breed’s office of Housing and Community Development,” said Brenda Storey, Executive Director. “Their support will help us in our goal to expand our capacity to provide medical services to the underserved communities in the Excelsior District.”

Construction is projected to start in the second quarter of 2021 and completed by the first quarter of 2023.
