A Note from Our Executive Director
San Francisco has created the San Francisco Legacy Business Registry and Mission Neighborhood Health Center is proud to have been nominated by Board of Supervisor David Campos.
The health center’s legacy is multifaceted. Starting with it’s roots in the 1960’s Civil Rights Movement, the center was established as part of the Office of Economic Opportunity “neighborhood health centers” as a War On Poverty Demonstration Program. The health center’s dual role was and is to provide medical and social services to disenfranchised populations while serving as a mechanism for community empowerment. Governed by the community for the community, the health center’s Board of Directors is primarily composed of patients of the health center.
For decades, generation after generation we have served as a training ground for young people entering health careers. True to our economic opportunity beginnings, hundreds of students and community members have volunteered, trained and developed knowledge and skills to further their careers and aspirations.
Belonging to the community, our walls have served as a canvas for multiple muralists including Michael Rios and Graciela Carillo of The Women’s Muralist Collective in the 1970’s and most recently in 2010 to muralist Eduardo Pineda and Joaquin Newman on their “Right to Good Health” mural.
Our legacy is also the concept of neighborhood based community health and our response throughout the decades to emerging health and social needs of our community. This has included addressing lead poisoning in children, teen smoking, childhood obesity, programs to treat chronic illness such as diabetes, asthma and HIV/AIDS and public health efforts such as the 2009 H1N1 flu epidemic when we immunized thousands against the flu.
Our legacy is indeed one of community empowerment and community health.
