PERINATAL HEALTH EDUCATOR
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Under supervision of the Clinical Chief of Women’s Clinic, the Perinatal Health Educator will assess and evaluate the health needs of perinatal patients and provide them with educational support , guidance and instruction. The primary duties and responsibilities associated with this position are listed below.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIP
Reports directly to the Clinical Chief of Women’s Clinic and indirectly to the Deputy Director.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assess health education and socio-economic needs at time of entry into care, orient women to comprehensive prenatal services, devise an individual plan for continuing health education and complete designated assessment forms.
- Provide patients with necessary ongoing individual counseling regarding health education needs and conduct trimester and post-partum assessments.
- Develop culturally appropriate, prenatal curriculum and other educational materials and act as primary facilitator in providing ongoing perinatal and childbirth preparation education for patients through individual and/or group counseling.
- Co-lead prenatal group visits following established prenatal curriculum and protocols for group visits.
- Participate in Wellness activities and lead efforts in the areas of women’s health and early childhood development.
- Develop and sustain collaborations with other organizations that enhance prenatal services to patients.
- Provide prenatal health education services at the Excelsior Clinic on a regular schedule.
- Assist in identifying and writing grant proposals for prenatal service activities.
- Coordinate other activities for prenatal program, such as yoga classes.
- Attend prenatal team meetings, departmental, staff meetings and other meetings as required.
- Works closely with UCSF Midwifery Program Coordinator and midwives in the planning and service delivery of prenatal services.
- Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- A minimum of 2 to 3 years experience in providing women’s health services.
- Ability to assess, implement, and evaluate the educational needs of the target population, and to implement and evaluate services provided by the various programs available to patients.
- Ability to counsel sensitive issues related to the services provided.
- Ability to be an enthusiastic team player.
- Bilingual English/Spanish required, bicultural preferred.
- BA or BS from an accredited university with major emphasis on Community Health Education or Public Health.
