Director of Nursing
The Mission Neighborhood Health Center is a non-profit, multi-service health care facility offering comprehensive health services for ambulatory patients. The center offers primary health care services, adult medicine, pediatrics, family planning, OB/GYN and HIV Services. The Center is committed to high quality, culturally competent primary care services, focusing on the Latino/Spanish-speaking population.
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Under the direction of the Medical Director (MD) and in conjunction with the Chief Operating Officer (COO), the Director of Nursing (DON) is responsible for overall direction, training and supervision of nursing personnel. The DON is also responsible for coordinating quality improvement projects and outcomes throughout the organization.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIP
The Director of Nursing will report directly to the Medical Director on medical and Quality Assurance matters and to the Chief Operating Officer on matters of process improvement projects and patient flow.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Supervise all nursing personnel and establish standards for nursing and maintaining accountability and responsibility for nursing services.
- Advises CEO, COO, HR, Medical Staff and Clinic Managers in matters related to nursing services.
- Consults with Medical Director concerning clinical issues, concerns and/or problems.
- Responsible for completion of special assignments as assigned by the Medical Director/COO that include but not limited to: EMR training, assisting with EMR implementation to all MNHC sites; participates in interview process for medical staff; assists COO with OPR standards; attend UDS training and updates.
- Participates in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of clinical programs and services assuring appropriate resources for the delivery of care.
- Evaluate all Charge Nurses within designated time frames and ensure that all medical assistants are evaluated by their Charge Nurses within designated time frames. Evaluate all nursing personnel on an on-going basis.
- Works with clinic managers to maintain the Nursing schedule to ensure maximum clinical coverage of qualified staff is scheduled to provide efficient and cost effective nursing coverage for all MNHC sites.
- Provides hands-on clinical nursing when the need arises.
- Coordinate and monitor patient flow.
- Maintains medical emergency equipment and clinical supplies, making necessary corrections to be cost effective; advises and directs purchasing on product information and supplies.
- Coordinate and monitor in-service training and continuing education requirements for all nursing personnel. Conduct regularly scheduled nursing department meetings, at least bimonthly, and provides documentation of such meetings.
- Coordinate tracking immunizations, PPDs and tracking of latent tuberculosis infection, as well as certain chronic illnesses.
- Writes, maintains and updates clinical policies and procedures for Nursing, Infection Control, and Quality Improvement ensuring state and federal standards of care and regulations are included.
- Responsible for organizing and promoting an effective learning environment for preceptorships of nursing students from schools of nursing as well as medical assistant externships from certificate programs as requested.
- Actively participates in MNHC quality improvement initiatives/collaborative(s) to decrease health disparities and improve quality outcomes as directed by the COO, or Medical Director.
- Actively participates in the Quality Improvement Committee and coordinates follow-up on areas requiring corrective action; plans, promotes and conducts organization wide performance improvement activities.
- Chairs the Infection Control Committee and in addition participates in Emergency Preparedness and Safety Committee, Senior Management Committee, and Clinical Chiefs Committee.
- Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Current California licensure as Registered Nurse.
- Two years experience in ambulatory care clinic or hospital experience; community clinic experience preferred.
- Three years increasingly responsible supervisory experience.
- Bilingual in English & Spanish preferred.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Computer literacy required.
- Knowledge of quality assurance processes.
